Poker variants

Postby Lovechips » Tue 10 Nov 2009 03:20

I have been playing texas hold em poker for a while now and I am starting to consider playing some other variants, only problem is that I can't decide on one and I also do not know much about any of the other variants let alone I don't know of many either, so my question is what are some variants of poker and also how do you play them?

Auctioneer, Position Poker, Take it or leave it, Hurricane, Three card monte, Four card guts, Piranha, Touchies.
They are the ones that i know about, My favourite one of these is Auctioneer, Max players for auctioneer is 7, the game is played and dealt like it is in HIgh low 7 card stud except players can choose about what cards if any to have face up, If no cards are exposed .The top card of the deck is exposed: The player can either fold, buy that card for $0.10, or see the next card. If he buys the card, the dealer moves to the next player, but if he wants to see the next card, then he can no longer fold nor buy the card exposed. The next card is exposed: The player can buy this card for $0.20 or see the next card. If he buys the card, the dealer moves to the next player, but if he wants to see the next card, then he can no longer buy the card exposed.
The next card is exposed: The player can buy this card for $0.30 or buy the next card for $0.50 blind.
Any cards exposed remain up for the next player.
IF A CARD IS EXPOSED:
The player can either fold, buy that card for $0.10, or see the next card. If he buys the card, the dealer moves to the next player, but if he wants to see the next card, then he can no longer fold nor buy the card exposed.
next card is exposed: The player can buy this card for $0.20 or see the next card. If they buy the card, the dealer moves to the next player, but if they want to see the next card, then they can no longer buy the card exposed
The next card is exposed: The player can buy this card for $0.30 or buy the next card for $0.50 blind.
Any cards exposed remain up for the next player.
IF 2 CARDS ARE EXPOSED
The player can either fold, buy the first card for $0.10, buy the second for $0.20, or see the next card. If they buy the card, the dealer moves to the next player, but if they want to see the next card, then they can no longer fold nor buy the card exposed.
The next card is exposed: The player can buy this card for $0.30 or buy the next card for $0.50 blind.
Any cards exposed remain up for the next player.
IF THERE ARE 3 CARDS EXPOSED
The player can either fold, buy the first card for $0.10, buy the second for $0.20, buy the third card for $0.30, or buy the next card for $0.50 blind.
Any cards exposed remain up for the next player.
Each round of dealing up-cards should start one player further to the left then it did the last time, and should start with the cards that were exposed during the last round. Down cards always start to the dealer's left.
Any cards that are still exposed when the round of down-cards is to be dealt are buried.

What about "One card guts"? I haven't heard of it before so I don't know what style of poker it is a variant of (7 card stud, 5 card stud etc) so can anyone tell me the game description and the rules etc, maybe even some tips on how to play or just a general guide? Also is this a popular variant that I can find online in many online poker rooms or is it more of a at home with friends style?

Unfortunately the only poker variant that I know anything about really at the moment is texas hold em and you already know about that one but I am finding heaps of help on this forum so i'll be playing like an experienced player in no time. I may even try one of these other variants you guys have mentioned here some time soon, although I should probably get used to hold em first otherwise knowing me I will end up getting the rules and how to play info for the games somehow mashed together in my mind and have some kind of a mutant game in my head lol typical, at least here too i can read how to play and whenever i forget it 's just a click away, i've heard of a game called, and i've changed the name slightly so that the part beginning with an S is not as offensive as the original title but hopefully you still understand the game im talking about, the game is called "Slaves and Masters" so if anyone remembers how to play this please let me know, i've played it a couple of times years ago and i remember that i really enjoyed it but i can't remember how to play or the rules or anything.

Here is a variant I recently found out about, it is called "Howdy doody". The game is a version of the 7 card stud poker style. In this version of 7 card stud though in this version all of the number 3's are wild in all hands going high. In any hands which are going low the king takes the place of being wild. Other than that it is played the exact same way as normal seven card stud, just has those few slight alterations to the rules and the game play.

Indian Poker:
Indian poker is a variant of 7 card stud poker.
Here is how it's played
Maximum Number of Players: 7
Wild Cards: The card on your forehead
The Game:
Each player takes the first card they were dealt, and without looking at it puts it on his forehead so that everyone else can see it.
The rest of the game is dealt and played like standard 7 Stud, except the card on each player's forehead is wild for him and is part of his hand.

It is really good especially for a laugh because when you play this variant of poker with your friends you can't help but laugh at yourself and your friends because of the cards on yours and their foreheads. It's a great party game too and when there are many poker variants that are rather difficult or just plain complicated to play and to understand and get the hang of, indian poker isn't like that at all, it is really easy to play and understand and get the hang of and is also quick and easy to teach to your friends and family.

Caribean Stud Poker:

The table may seat 6-8 players with a maximum number of 9 players.
Vigorish is 5% but depends on your strategy
The game:
Players ante at a minimum of the table minimum. Each player is dealt five cards down and the dealer gets four cards down and one up. Players take a look at their cards without exposing them to other players and then make the decison to either fold and lose their ante or call. Players who wish to call must then bet an amount which is equal to twice their ante. Once all of the players have either called or folded, the hand the dealer has is then revealed. If the dealer isn't in posession of at least a king high, then the dealers hand is said to not qualify and the all players who called get pain evenly amongst themselves on their antes and their call bets are then pushed. In the event of the dealer qualifying, then each of the players hands are compared to the dealers. If the dealers hand beats the players then the players ante and call bet are both lost, if the player beats the dealer then the players anter gets paid even money and the call bet is paid as follows:
Pair or less - 1:1
Two Pair - 2:1
Three-of-a-kind - 3:1
Straight - 4:1
Flush - 5:1
Full House - 7:1
Four-of-a-kind - 20:1
Straight Flush- 50:1
Royal Flush- 100:1

The payouts which are listed above, should be displayed on the table.
