Where can I find a basic rules for poker?

Postby aussiegirl » Tue 10 Nov 2009 03:15

I am new to the game of poker and just want to know what site or book I can refer to in order to learn some of the basic rules for the game? Even if you can share your knowledge here with me that'd be great too. If there is a good one that I can go to which can also explain other aspects such as some strategies and guides then that would be really great. Thankyou.

Oh ok sorry that I didn't elaborate fully. I would like to know what the basic rules are for poker Texas Hold em poker style. Not too worried about any real strategies or anything just yet, I would like to first focus on understanding the game in general first and then work on the strategies and everything else after I have learnt and understood the rules of the game and had a bit of experience in playing it.

There are three types of texas hold em. They are Limit, No limit and pot limit. In limit hold em there are set limits for each round of betting. For pot limit hold em the blinds are posted and then players can bet any amount of money up to the amount of money in the pot. In No Limit hold em the blinds are posted and then the players are free to bet any amount of chips they want when ever they want. Check here for a guide on texas hold em rules: http://www.poker777.com/poker-texas-holdem.php

Firstly, the blinds are posted, big blind and small blind. Next, players all get to have a round of betting starting from the player sitting to the left of the two players who posted the blinds. The players can choose to either call, raise or fold when it is their turn. Once the first betting round is complete, the dealer then gets rid of the top card of the deck, i can't remember what this act is called though, Next, the dealer flips over the next three cards and places them face up on the table. After this, another round of betting starts yet again from the player to the left of the dealer, in this round and any other rounds of betting the player at their turn can either check, call, raise or fold. Now, the dealer will take the top card of the deck and discard it yet again and then place one more card in a face up position on the table and this is the 4th community card. The person to the left of the dealer starts the next betting round. After this round of betting, the dealer will yet again discard the top card of the deck and place the final card face up on the table, After the last round of betting the players who are remaining in the game still must reveal their hands and the one who made the starting bet or te player who made the last raise has to show their hands first, upon inspecting the cards the dealer determines the winner by who has the better hand. I think that was it, if i missed anything please let me know. :)

Is there any limit as to how many times there can be raises in a round of betting? I mean can every single player in the round of betting choose to raise or can the betting amount only be raised a certain amount of times for each betting round? If there is a limit as to how many times per round the amount can be raised then how does the dealer determine who gets to raise and who doesn't or is it just a luck of the draw style thing?

When contemplating the blinds there are two different perspectives to consider them at, these are defensive and offensive. Defensive - You want to protect your blinds when you're in the blinds.
Offensive - You want to steal the other players' blinds when you can.
The ability to steal blinds is needed in order to be the winning player in a tough game of poker. These tough games are usually much tighter which means that stealing blinds becomes much more important. Stealing blinds is not that hard in such a situation though and all you need to do is to play agressively, raising preflop. If you are successful at this, and the blinds fold, you have just managed to win yourself a free round of poker. Positioning is also an important factor when it comes to decision making for timing in stealing blinds. If you find yourself in late position and no one else has come in then you can steal the blinds via small pairs and ace rag, of course you can also steal blinds from any position if you have a premium starting hand. Another important thing to remember is that you will also need to defend your blinds from other players who also use this kind of game play. Good poker players are rather selective about which hands they choose to play and which ones they fold. If you let your blinds get stolen every single round by a raise then you are losing quite a significant amount of money and the bottom line is that when dealing with the blinds you will have to learn how to do this in order to become a successful player.
